Trueline trains are producing MP36's in HO. See http://www.truelinetrains.ca/locomotives/ho---mp36-3c-3s-mp-40.

I will be holding on to this

I will be holding on to this article. I also need to go searching for more info about john drye's layout. I haven't seen anything about modern layouts based on the DC area.

Hooray a commuter article....

Not  bad look at the VRE, but there are so many other commuter operations out there!  The article only covered a few other operations.

On the other hand, I'm happy some other people are modeling commuter trains.     I tend to feel very alone in this corner of the hobby,  as I know few people who also model commuter trains,   and in most cases,  my fleet is far more extensive.

My focus is modeling the Northeast Corridor in the late 1970s,  but I also have a lot of SEPTA equipment and other commuter odds and ends.

So far, my 70s commuter roster looks like this.  Many are still being built, but I have the models.-

Locomotives

  • 2- GG1s- #4883, #4876
  • 2- E8A- #4253, #????
  • 2-GP7P- #5681, #????
  • 1 GP40P- (still early in the kitbash stage)

Electric Multiple Units

  • 3- Arrow I
  • 4- Arrow II Married pairs (8 cars)
  • 3-Arrow III Singles
  • 7 Arrow III Married pairs (14 cars)

Coaches

  • 2-  1500 series ex-PRR 21 roomette sleepers (PC)
  • 1- ex L&N AC&F fluted side coach (PC/NJ DOT 2167)
  • 1- ex New York Central Snack Bar Lounge (PC/NJDOT 4437)
  • 3- ex ATSF coaches (PC)
  • 2-ex GN AC&F 44 seat coaches (CNJ)
  • 1-ex GN AC&F 60 Seat coach (CNJ)

I also have a huge amount of other commuter trains-

Electric Multiple Units

  • 3 PATCO-1 Married Pair Rapid Transit Cars (6 cars)
  • 3 Silverliner II (2 GEM, 1 Island Model Works)
  • 3 Silverliner III
  • 3 Silverliner IV singles
  • 1 Silverliner IV Married Pair (IHP)
  • 6 Reading "Green Car" Steel MUs
  • 2 PRR MP54s

Locomotives

  • 2 NJ DOT U34CHs
  • 2 NJT ALP44s
  • 1 NJT U34CH
  • 3 NJT GP40FH-2
  • 2 NJT F40PH-2
  • 1 NJT ALP46
  • 1 NJT PL42AC
  • 2 SEPTA AEM7s
  • 1 NH FL9
  • 1 PRSL RDC-1
  • 1 Reading RDC-3

Coaches

  • 2 NJT Comet II cab cars
  • 9 NJT Comet II Coach
  • 1 NJT Comet III coach
  • 1 NJT Comet III coach with toilet
  • 2 SEPTA Comet II Cab cars
  • 10 SEPTA Comet II Coaches
  • 1 MBTA Comet Cab Car
  • 1 CDOT Comet II coach (potentially another coach and cab on the way!)

HO or N

If you model in HO I've been kicking around a Free-mo subset for commuter modeling. Double track mini-mos only 12" wide. I drew up a plan for a 3ft long 1ft wide module that would be faithful in scale (except the platform would be shortened) of a station in north Holland. Free-mo standards call for 26" wide for double track normally. But that gets hard to move. I was thinking of something more akin to the Japanese N-track concept of modules small enough you could carry them on commuter rail!

I'd also like to do a NEC Free-mo module but unless a bunch of us do it, it'll look silly.

There IS an NEC modular group

Matt,

It just so happens that there is a modular  Northeast Corridor club you can join.   We're looking for people to build modules, and we've already got some talented people on board.   Most of us have experience building scale catenary as well.

Join our Yahoo group and say hello,  we'll definitely get you started.    We've already been to a few shows,  such as the East Penn Traction Club Convention, and the Mass Transit & Trolley Meet in New Brunswick, NJ.

So far,  we have nice big 6' radius curves and a couple straight modules, and we're looking for more people so we can make an even more massive set up.

I'm starting with the North Elizabeth station,  a small commuter stop south of Waverly  but north of Elmora and Elizabeth station in New Jersey.    It will be made from two 5'X18" modules.

Go here, say hello!

Thanks!

I'm normally just a bit south of you guys, but am overseas right now. I look forward to seeing what you have. My focus is Free-mo but I also like to see big setups. Depending on layout height and some other factors I wouldn't mind seeing a Free-mo to your standards module to join our groups together. We normally set up just north of Baltimore at the Great Scale Model Train show aka "Timonium Show". But we have some members from New Jersey.
