Less contrary and more mainstream

Don,

I think all of your points are valid and many modelers are coming to similar conclusions as they contemplate a layout. I've been an advocate of modeling a mile for about a decade years now, with the latest layout project focused only on a freight house, team track, and small yard in 1926. Building this 10 x 16 HO scale layout has kept me busy for the last ten months and it is nearly ready to operate.

If anything, a more manageable project is far less a mountain of work just to achieve the operational stage.

Eric
