Love it!

Great series with perfect photos and instruction. Use of the masking tape for the conveyors is genius! I'm trying to see how I can adapt this to a non-coal hauler!

Re: Comments

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. The idea for using masking tape came from my friend Stuart Thayer. He saw the large conveyor when I was applying the styrene for the belt and mentioned that masking tape would also work. In hindsight, using masking tape for the belt on the large conveyor would have been much easier and would have looked better.

Excellent article

Very clear instructions and great photos. I will be modeling this coal loader for my layout. I just have one question, where can I get drawing 5 with the bent details?

@pencilpusher49

Drawing 5 is included in the bonus download for the December 2012 issue. Drop down the Magazine menu on this web page and select "Subscriber-only extras" - that will get you to the December 2012 bonus downloads (or select it from the link in the magazine). The drawings are available in both SketchUp format and PNG format (the latter is similar to bitmap or JPEG and can be viewed with the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer among others).

Conveyor Belt: Use video tape.

I use video tape for my conveyor belts and glue on real coal. Works great and can be bent around rollers.

Great Job...

On a very neat structure. If you want to build a new and improved version I know another railroad who could use the old one. Congratulations on a very well done project. John

Contact Info

BrianS (user 64309) contacted me about getting copies of the drawings from this article. The subscribers extra link to the zip file of the drawings that were included with the article no longer works. I replied to his email and the message got bounced as undeliverable. A second email to the same address appeared to go through but I haven't heard back from him. BrianS- if you see this, please let me know whether or not you got my email.
