So far we've been able to determine that MRH Issue 1 works fine on older Macs running OS X 10.4.11 (tiger).

However, the newer op system Leopard appears to have many problems.

Could those of you out there with Macs please post your experiences trying to read issue 1? Please note model of machine and precise OS version you're using so we can look for patterns.

Our intent is to also develop a flattened version of the magazine that's just really nice JPGs and then also include links to the rich media goodies on the web (so we don't have to deal with media playback issues INSIDE a PDF).

Joe, I have a Macbook Pro 15"

Joe,

I have a Macbook Pro 15" Intel Dual Core Model,  System OS is 10.5.6.

When I open the file it doesn't load the flash and just says buffering, I took a screen shot of the opening screen and posted it here -  picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2NZs69Hb4kKNHOCIi1HSTQ

When I click on the video in the fast tracks ad, I get the white box where the video would be playing picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/5z06oDtqMbuF31Otpg0bEQ

When I click on the 3d images in the DCC Decoder section those load without and problem and I can rotate the images without and issues.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Rob

Rob:

What about the 3D click and spin photos like the one in Marty's Getting Real column, do any of those work?

What about the Model Trains video ad ... do the previews play?

What about the UP bids ad on page 8? Does it play?

All of the 3D click and spin

All of the 3D click and spin photos work fine without issue,  the Model Trains Video links open up the video window for each of the dvd's.

The UP Bid's ad goes to the white box when clicked.

Scarpia, it's MRH on Adobe Reader 9 and Mac Leopard OS

Yes, the browser isn't involved here - it's the pages with Flash video on them inside a PDF.

It sounds like Quicktime videos work then - all the click and spin videos are Quicktime!

So that's the solution for now ... we'll create a version of MRH issue 1 that uses Quicktime for the embedded videos.

The only problem will be the Flash ads ... I'm thinking of making the Mac version of those ads available as a clickable page that takes you to a web page with the ad playing - then if you want to go further you can click on the Flash ad inside the browser.

Thanks, Rob - it sounds like the Mac Leopard OS isn't quite ready for the latest Flash content inside a PDF.

Mac Update

 Joe,

I have three macs, a New imac, an plastic PowerPC G4 and a G4 laptop.

The first is a new iMac 3.06Ghz, 24 in with NVDIA video card. It runs OS running 10.5.6 The title page, Dallas ad, Tim's ad videos,  Alkem Scale Models ad, the flexi-wire ad and the UP ad do not work.  The spinning cars, and your dvd videos do work.

The old G4 Mac is running 10.4.11  Most things are working, but the Adobe reader crashed while reading, but was easily reloaded. Seems like all is working on this, even the Dallas ad worked, which didn't on my PC at work. Tim's video works. The UPbids.net ad worked. The Alkem Scale Models ad worked too!

Looks like 10.5 is the problem.

It certainly appears Mac OS 10.5.x and Flash have issues

I found some tech notes on Adobe's site relating to this issue. Anyone out there with OS10.5 on a Mac and tech savvy enough to follow some technical instructions willing to do what these technotes recommend and report back to us how it goes?

Adobe tech note 1 regarding Flash Player problems with OS 10.5.x

It sounds like downgrading back to Flash Player 9 actually fixes the problems on OS 10.5.x. Here's a page with some links to Flash Player 9 versions for the Mac.

Scroll down a bit to find the links to Flash Player 9.

I realize most Mac users won't want to fiddle with their systems to this degree just to read MRH. We're also working on more long-term solutions that don't include Flash - thank you very much Adobe ...

Adobe won't let me install Adobe Reader 9 if version 10 is already loaded.

No luck with Flash Player 9,

No luck with Flash Player 9, I ran the Flash Player Uninstall program from http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157,checked to see that flash wasn't on my system and then reinstalled 9.  Still had the same flash issues as before, I guess it must be a 10.5 issue.

Calling all Mac OS 10.5 users

Okay, all you Mac OS 10.5 users out there ... I've created a couple of web pages with the "worst" of our Flash ads in them to see if you Mac OS 10.5 folks can at least play Flash ads in a browser.

Try these out:

Dallas Model Works ad

Alkem Scale Models ad

Let me know if they work for you and which browser you're using.

If these work then we'll roll the "bad boy" Flash content out of the PDF and onto a web page. Then we'll make a version of the magazine you can download and read on Mac OS 10 with Adobe Reader 9 - and we'll make the pages that used to be Flash ads into a static page you can click to bring up a browser window with the cool Flash content in it.

I can view both of the links

I can view both of the links in both Firefox 3.0.5 and Safari 3.2.1.

Now for me at least that Dallas Model Works ad comes up fine in the pdf file, I don't know if something different was done with that one.

Browsers

Joe, my earlier question was due that acrobat can run embeded in the browser window; sorry if I didn't make that clear.

The two adds listed above work fine on my machine, 10.5.6, both in

Safari Version 3.2.1 (5525.27.1)

and

Firefox Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008120121 Firefox/3.0.5

What is interesting that if I try to open the PDF in Preview, the application crashes. The PDF does work in Acrobat Pro 9 on my machine (10.5.6), but it gives a security warning about content, and than  "buffers" the multimedia content.

Hope this helps.

I have Leopar 10.5.6 on a

I have Leopard (10.5.6) on a MacBook with Adobe Reader 8.1.3. I usually run Preview (Apple software) to read PDFs, mainly because 97% of them aren't multimedia enhanced.

Trying to open MRH with Preview cause a crash to the software

With Adobe 8 I can read and spin the 3D photos, but no videos: it keep on trying to "buffer" something, but it never stops.

I might try to update to the latest Adobe Reader version and see if it works, for now I just use Parallels Desktop on which I have WinXP installed and Adobe latest to run some win-only software I need for my job.

We need a version that works on Adobe Reader 8

I'm thinking there's value in a version that works well on Adobe Reader 8.

That will probably play well on OS 10.5  ... and of course we know it ought to also work on Linux.

It shouldn't be too tough to produce ... we're only talking a half a dozen flash ads that are the "bad boys."

Give us a couple weeks and we'll try to get something that will work in Reader 8.

Late to the OS.X party

Sorry for the late arrival. I just got in the door from work and had to join in.

I'm operating a iMac 20" with OSX.5.6

I can view the 3D ads just fine, however no videos. Tried using both Safari and Firefos browers to no avail. Even your links to Dallas and Akem fail to open. Firefox gave me an error message "Firefox can not establish a connetion to server vps2642.inmotionhosting.com"

I will be a good boy and waiting for the "Wizards" to find a fix....

Reader 8 is not the answer

Joe

Backtracking to reader8 will not fix the Flash issues.  Even though the Flash content is inside the PDF, on Mac at least it is rendered by the system Flash player.  So downgrading the Adobe Reader will not help.  On my system, as noted above,  I can play the Dallas ad but not the other Flash content.  Both ads work fine in my browser though. seems to be something about the handoff.

Question; I was able to play all content in the preview out last year.  What was different.  My Flash was backdated at the time.  Might have been on reader 8 somehow but dont think so as I went from 7 straight to 9. ???

I recognize Reader 8 won't solve everything

TCC:

I recognize just going to Reader 8 is not the total solution. There's also some dynamics of the Flash media that need to be worked out so we'll be experimenting with that part too.

But if we can get the Flash media to play in a browser, that's an option that gets it out of the PDF and can help us going forward.

The other option is using Quicktime for any pure Flash videos like the S curves videos. Quicktime obviously is better supported on Macs since it's Apple software.

wish I was a programer

Joe;

Wish I could help more.  What exactly do you mean by 'play in a browser'?  I presume your talking about the 2 adds you listed earlier.  I can get the Dallas ad to work by clicking it twice so I am not sure what dynamics you are talking about.  AsI asked earlier, you dont have to answer, what is the diffs tween that and the Alkem advert.  The answer to that question might be really interesting.  Has Apple been any help on this or has anyone asked them?  Dont mean to be a pest, in just curious.

The difference ...

There is a difference ...

The Dallas ad is Flash CS4

The Alkem ad is Flash CS3

The UPBids and Litchfield ads are Flash CS2

If there's any behavior differences between these various ads, then it's the difference in Flash versions.

All the other interactive ads use out-of-the-box Acrobat Pro capabilties with buttons and rollovers and are not Flash at all.

Most video content is Flash CS3 (like the Fast Tracks videos and the 3rd PlanIt videos).

Finally, the 3D click n spins are Quicktime.

flash version

Joe, You were up late.

So if the Dallas ad works but the Akem doesn't, Would it work if redone in CS4?? or CS2?

When using reader8 the stuff done in CS2 didnt work - hmm?

When was CS4 released?  Does it somehow fix part of this?

If you can list all the flash content I will do more testing.  Got a cold and stuck in bed so have the time.
