Available in both HO and N scale, the models use multiple layers of acrylic of various thicknesses to recreate an accurate rendition of the prototype tunnels. The inner layer is designed to accept a thin styrene sheet (not included) to allow more realistic modeling of the tunnel lining. Custom engraving of other names on the tunnels is available for an additional charge of $10 per portal. For additional information send Bernie Kempinski an email at info@alkemscalemodels.com.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Göppingen, Germany. Märklin & Cie GmbH has improved its financial position and expects to emerge from bankruptcy in January. The troubled company was purchased in May 2006 by a British investment group for a reported $38 million. At the time Märklin was suffering from weak sales and had approximately $70 million in debt. The new owners broadened its product line in 2007 by buying the remaining assets of bankrupt Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk, owner of the G scale LGB brand. In February 2009, 151-year old Märklin filed for bankruptcy protection. The workforce in Germany was reduced from 900 to approximately 500. In addition, Märklin employs approximately 500 workers in Hungary.

Hong Kong, China. Sanda Kan Indusrial Co. Ltd., has agreed to produce O scale products for several well-known brands including Aristo-Craft/RMT, Atlas O and Williams using tooling originally developed for K-Line Trains. The tooling, which is owned by Sanda Kan, became available earlier this year following Lionel’s announcement that it would discontinue marketing K-Line branded products after 2010. Sanda Kan and Bachmann are owned by Kader Holdings.

Longmont, Colorado. InterMountain Railway Company is currently interviewing candidates to work full-time at the firms home office in Longmont as a dealer contact sales representative. For additional information call Richard at 800-472-2530 or send him an email at careers@intermountain-railway.com.

Mansfield, Mass. The four-year old Craftsman Structure Show, which originated here in 2007, has shut down. The surprise announcement, jointly released by James Deignan, Doug Foscale, Hal Reynolds and Mike Sarno, said that a new partnership between RailroadKits.com, Fos Scale Models, Atlantic Scale Modelers and BEST Trains, will launch an entirely new event called The Fine Scale Model Railroad Expo (FSMRE).

The show will be sponsored by NorthEastern Scale Lumber. In addition to continuing to highlight structure buildings, FSMRE will feature quality modeling as a whole in all scales including dioramas, scenery, detailing, weathering and rolling stock. Contests, clinics and special product demonstrations will also be scheduled. In an effort to establish a high caliber of model railroad craftsmanship and avoid the appearance of a flea market, vendor participation at FSMRE will be by invitation only. The new event will be held in the New England area at a location and date to be announced soon. Additional information including vendor applications is available at www.modelrailroadexpo.com.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Kalmbach Publishing reports that it will reintroduce an updated edition of the Model Train Magazine Index in January 2011. The company said it was not feasible to upgrade the original data base when it terminated the popular index program last summer. A senior editor at Model Railroader magazine said that after canceling the program, Kalmbach's Information Systems department devised an efficient way to transfer the information to a modern database. The new program will offer data for more than two dozen model railroad and prototype railroading magazines from 1934 through 2010. Registration will be required by users who will then be allowed access to the index at no cost. Kalmbach will continue to update information on its own publications including Model Railroader, Trains, Classic Trains, Classic Toy Trains, and Garden Railways. Later in 2011, Kalmbach plans to offer other appropriate publications the opportunity to enter information about their own periodicals into the index. The offer will be to print publications only and will exclude online material and eZines such as Model Railroad Hobbyist.

Meanwhile, other sources are also developing a replacement index. With tentative encouragement from the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA), Clint Hyde and Dave Emery have been working for several months on a program based on 'crowdsourcing' in which individuals can be part of the update team to add or correct index entries. The expectation is that with a large number of volunteers each updating a few entries, the data base can be quickly brought up to date. The broad-based index will include both print and online publications. A beta test of the program is available for review at www.rrmagindex.org. Blackstone

Your rating: None (1 vote)

Blackstone (www.blackstonemodels.com) has scheduled a second production run of its HOn3 scale D&RGW 800 series drop-bottom gondola. The ready-to-run cars are expected to arrive next spring. Early reservations are recommended since the initial run sold out before the shipment arrived from overseas.

The engineering preproduction sample of the frameless GRAMPS car shown above is one of two new HOn3 scale tank cars coming from Blackstone Models late this year. Both the narrow-frame and frameless versions of the 6000 gallon cars that were built in the 1920s from standard-gauge equipment for operation on the narrow gauge rails of the D&RGW and Rio Grande Southern will be produced. The narrow-frame U.T.L.X. car will be available in three numbers (12770, 13236 and 13120) in both weathered and non-weathered paint as well as a painted, unlettered version. Two car numbers (55227 and 55140) will be offered on the frameless GRAMPS car with the same paint/weathered options. The cars are scheduled for arrival in early 2011 and will be priced at $54.95 plus an additional $5 for the weathered versions.

Who Was Gramps?

The GRAMPS cars were named for Lafayette Hughes who owned a small refinery in Alamosa, Colorado, where he refined oil delivered by the railroad from pumping fields above Chama, New Mexico. Mr.Hughes’ grandchildren enjoyed watching the trains and wanted to know which of the cars belonged to their 'gramps'. Hughes solved the problem by leasing 20 cars and having them boldly stenciled GRAMPS, so the children would have no difficulty identifying the cars from a distance.

Con-Cor International (www.con-cor.com) showed this preliminary engineering sample of its forthcoming HO scale Pierce Arrow Galloping Goose at the National Train Show in Milwaukee this summer. After several delays imposed by its contract manufacturer in China, Con-Cor says it is expecting delivery of both the HOn3 and HO scale models this month. The ready-to-run DC models will come with a 10-pin NMRA DCC connector on the PC board (a DCC decoder is not included).

Con-Cor is quoting fall delivery for both the HO and N scale versions of its Pioneer Zephyr 3-car train set. The ready-to-run models replicate the twin headlight version of the famous early streamliner that operated until 1960. The second headlight (an early version of an oscillating Mars light) was installed in the nose in the early 1940s following several accidents. Con-Cor’s DC model uses a flashing LED to simulate the oscillating light. Instructions are included that describe how to prepare the model for a DCC decoder (not included) including special programming to achieve realistic oscillation of the Mars light.

Kadee is rapidly converting many of its popular HO scale couplers to the newer Whisker® design. For example, the old #40 coupler series will be replaced with the #140 Whisker® series. The #153, #156, and #158 are the Whisker® scale head series but will not replace the #58 coupler. The present #118 SF shelf-coupler is being replaced by a new #118 SF Shelf-Whisker® coupler. The #78 scale (small head) coupler with scale draft gear is being replaced by #178 Whisker® version. The familiar #5 coupler will continue as Kadee’s standard-head in Kadee’s coupler line and the #58 will remain as the present backbone of their scale-head coupler line and the 20 and 30 series couplers will remain unchanged... at least for now.

Still under development are Whisker® couplers attached to trucks and a new logging car Whisker® coupler. As new Whisker® couplers are introduced, older styles are being sold at reduced prices while supplies last. Visit www.kadee.com to verify cost and the latest availability.

Lake Junction

Your rating: None (1 vote)

Lake Junction Models (www.lakejunctionmodels.com) has a laser-cut craftsman kit for a Standard Northern Depot as used on the Missouri Pacific and the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern railroads. N.J.International has several new ready-to-install signals available this month. Each unit is authentically painted and wired with LEDs and resistors. The group will include an HO scale bracket-type signal mast with a top marker and a six LED disc head at $40 and a six LED disc head in HO scale at $20 and O scale at $24. Also an eight LED disc head in HO scale at $23. Recently announced markers include both single units in HO scale at $8 and O scale at $13, and double units in HO scale $13 and O scale at $20. For complete details visit www.njinternational.com.

Rapido Trains Incorporated ( www.rapidotrains.com ) will produce a limited run of HO scale CPA20-5 and CPA24-5 C-Liner diesel locomotives decorated for New Haven and the Long Island Rail Road. The decision to produce the C-Lines was boosted by the exceptional response from Rapido’s recent announcement for Long Island Rail Road Dashing Dan 10-window Osgood-Bradley lightweight coaches (see MRH page 26, Sept-Oct issue #9). Rapido will use existing tooling leased from True Line Trains to manufacture the 5-axle C-Liners built in the early 1950s by Fairbanks Morse.

In addition to prototypically authentic artwork and decoration, Jason Shron of Rapido said the C-Liners will have road specific details such as grab irons, correct side grilles and proper roof fans. Shron noted that since the models will come from tooling cut several years ago the C-Liners may not have the same high level of detail found on state-of-the-art models such as Rapido’s FP9, however, it will still be an outstanding model that both Rapido and modelers can be proud of. Suggested pricing will be $170 for DCC ready versions and $290 for models equipped with Soundtrax Tsunami decoders.

Early reservations are suggested since the production quantity will be set to fulfill only the number of orders on hand.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Greenville, South Carolina: Plans are underway to develop what is being touted as the largest and most technically advanced HO scale model railroad in North America. The Miniature World of Trains is the brain child of Frank Ruby, owner of Blue Ridge Hobbies in Greenville, who says he is promoting the gigantic layout and adjoining railroad museum to educate and entertain the general public in state-of-the-art miniaturization. The fully computerized and digitally controlled layout is to be housed in a 40,000 square foot air conditioned facility featuring hundreds of operating trains and moving vehicles all modeled to the highest quality and standards.

Ruby said the plan is to start the project by recreating historical railroad scenes from the Carolinas, than expand the miniature world north to New York and New England, than turn to the west coast, building familiar railroad districts and facilities along the way. A few of the items on the long range construction schedule include recreations of PRR’s Horseshoe Curve, the Northeast Corridor, New York’s Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal, upstate New York, a Pittsburg steel mill, the Chicago “L”, North Platte yard, Denver Union Station, the Rockies including Moffat Tunnel, the huge Long Beach Container Terminal and the coast line. Narrow gauge segments will include recreating both Cumbras & Toltec and the Durango and Silverton.

A board of directors has been formed with work proceeding on signing qualified volunteers to help construct the massive layout and to obtain sponsors and adequate funding. Ruby expects to employ 100 to 150 full-time staff when MWOT is in full operations. For more information contact Frank Ruby at 864-255-4671 or visit www.miniatureworldoftrains.com.

St. Louis, Missouri: In recognition of their contribution to the betterment of narrow gauge modeling, Ellis Atwood, John Parker (San Juan Car Company), Steve Dominguez (Blackstone), Nancy Workman (Blackstone) and the late Brian Ellerby (Evergreen Scale Models) were inducted into the Narrow Gauge Hall of Fame during the groups national convention held here last month.
