A tale of Two Paint Booths

The SMR has gone without a permanent paint booth for many decades.  That has changed since my wife and I have started cleaning out the stuff we've accumulated over the past many years.  That will save our heirs from just having to dump things.  More pertinent to the SMR, it has opened up space for a permanent temporary paint booth.

Prototype to Layout.

We look at the real thing at Bingham canyon mine, then I show my version I built on the Copper King Mine and Railroad. There were a few things (places or structures) what was important for me to model on my layout.

It’s The Fresh Express on the AGW

It’s Fresh Friday. I recently finished these four “Fresh” cars for the AGW. They are 60’ insulated Eel River cars for hauling perishable products.  Shhh! They are on the way to Miller Brewing in Milwaukee to be loaded with Miller Beer products.

Improving Sound on HO Kato Diesels

There is no question in my mind about the fidelity of Kato HO locomotive shells. The tooling is superb and continues to improve. The downside is the shells are solid so there is little choice in installing a speaker for DCC sound. And on the recent units I modified, the frames were pretty much a road bock to sound routed through the bottom.

IAIS's 4th Sub - Easy backdrop coving (thanks Bernie Halloran!)

Back in the December 2013 MRH, Bernie Halloran wrote of using rolled vinyl for backdrop coving - https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/magazine/mrh-2013-12-dec/cove-your-corners .  I'm really happy he did so, because it really did make the job very easy, and it worked great for for my peninsula backdrop as well.  More details in my first reply.

Laser Cutting Doors

I've been messing about with the laser cutter.  Work has been busy over the last few months and we recently moved and are still trying to get organized, so in between work and projects (usually in the middle of the night) I try to refine my skills with the laser.  Recent work on that has led to the attached photos of a doorway.  I designed this in Inkscape (a good, free drawing program) and cut it out of Polybak and a Fiber One cereal box.  Polybak is a resin impregnated kraft paper used in furniture manufacturing, available by mail order at https://distributorservic
